The Cali Zoo was founded in 1969, and the zoological foundation in Cali began operating in 1980. The main function of the zoo is to create educational and reproduction programs for wild animals in captivity for their conservation. It also has as its principles: rescue of animals in captivity and the exhibition of around 2,500 animals and 233 species (21% fish, 30% birds, 21% mammals, 12% reptiles, and 9% butterflies).
Taking advantage of the framework agreement that was signed this year between the Universidad del Pacífico and the Cali Zoo Foundation, this internship was carried out from March to September 2023; specifically in the Aquarium, whose main activities were related to the measurement of water quality parameters, fish quarantine, feeding and care of exhibition fish, and aquarium adaptation.
With this practice, the importance of maintaining good water quality in the cultivation of aquatic organisms was understood, and what the ideal ranges are for the health of the fish, and how these values are corrected, until the appropriate ones are achieved; The different types of food that should be offered to fish in captivity were also reviewed, according to the species and life stage. The concept and need to quarantine any aquatic organism before entering exhibition aquariums was also understood.
